Windows locks session JSON files briefly during antivirus scans or
browser polling, causing os.replace() to raise WinError 5
(ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED). Add _safe_replace() helper that retries with
exponential backoff (50ms to 800ms, max 5 attempts) on PermissionError.
No-op on non-Windows platforms.
Replaces all 5 os.replace() call sites in models.py:
- Session.save() (main file + backup)
- _write_session_index() (full rebuild + fast path)
- prune_session_from_index()
Codex deep-gate caught a CORE regression in the original top-N cap: capping
_apply_sidebar_state_db_overrides also capped the SOURCE classification that
/api/sessions filters on BEFORE the lazy lineage correction, so a stale-CLI JSON
row whose state.db source is webui could be silently filtered out of a WebUI-only
sidebar once it fell beyond the cap. Split the read: the indexed sessions-table
source/title lookup runs for ALL rows; only the expensive messages COUNT/MAX
aggregation (the actual 5-18s bottleneck) is capped to top-N. Added a 500-row
end-to-end regression with a real state.db proving the beyond-cap stale-CLI row
stays webui.
On power-user instances with thousands of sessions, GET /api/sessions
blocked 5-18s in the all_sessions.state_db_overrides stage:
_apply_sidebar_state_db_overrides read state.db for every row (2400+ ids)
on every concurrent poll. With the gateway-watcher reading and the agent
writing the same state.db, this became lock/IO contention that piled up
concurrent polls and flapped the UI to 'Connection lost'.
Cap the override lookup to the top-N most-recent (paint-priority) rows
that are actually visible, mirroring the existing lineage-enrichment cap
(#4638). The caller passes an already pinned-first/newest-first sorted
list, so the top-N covers the visible window; rows beyond the cap keep
their JSON source/title and are corrected lazily on history-panel open.
Cap defaults to 300, env-configurable via
HERMES_WEBUI_STATE_DB_OVERRIDE_TOP_N (0 disables). Fails open.

Sidebar rows whose backing state.db session has zero messages (a '+'-click
that opened a row but the first turn never committed, or a sidebar nav that
opened then closed before any message landed) now get pruned instead of
lingering forever. The existing #3238/#4591 orphan-prune path only handled
CLI/API-server sidecars; this adds a parallel pass for native-WebUI rows.
- api/models.py: add agent_session_zero_message_sids() batch helper that
mirrors agent_session_rows_existing()'s safe-degrade contract (returns
frozenset() on any error so a transient failure never causes data loss).
Add a small tombstone file at SESSION_DIR/_pruned_webui_orphans.json
(capped at the last 500 sids) so the next poll's
recover_missing_index_sidecars does not re-add a pruned orphan to the
sidebar index — the per-poll fsync'd index write + state.db probe loop
the original PR would have hit on every poll for every orphan. The
helper, the load, and the full-scan fallback all honor the tombstone.
new_session() and import_cli_session() clear any matching tombstone
entry so a fresh session with the same id isn't shadowed.
- api/routes.py: extract the webui zero-message prune into a private
_prune_orphaned_webui_zero_message_sessions() helper, then call it
from BOTH branches of _build_session_list_cache_payload. Established
installs pin show_cli_sessions=False (per api/config.py:7637-7648)
and are exactly the long-time users who accumulated the #4985 404
orphans — the original PR only ran the prune in the if branch and
silently skipped the else branch (maintainer review
IC_kwDOR1LuPM8AAAABHsyFGg). The helper also honors the tombstone
defensively so the prune can't thrash on a row the index still
carries from a prior poll.
- tests/test_issue4985_orphaned_webui_zero_message.py: 39 regression
tests — the original 25 (7 helper-direct + 12 monkeypatch predicate
tests + 6 real-pipeline end-to-end tests) plus 14 follow-up tests
driven by the MUST-FIX / tombstone / r6 signal-swap reviews:

fix: target post-#1171 survivors + hoist + tombstone + r6 sidecar-load probe
The r5 sidecar-only retention signal keyed off the row's cached
``message_count`` — which is stale-positive on the very phantom rows
#4985 exists to prune (sidecar ``messages`` empty but cached count > 0).
The r6 signal swaps that cached-count probe for a ``Session.load(sid)
.messages`` probe, gated to ``state.db``-empty candidates only so the
common live-row path stays a no-op. Three retain tests now write real
populated ``messages`` arrays (not just ``[]``) so the loaded-sidecar
check has something to find; the stale-count phantom test is left as
the canonical r6 regression (its ``messages=[]`` + ``message_count=5``
sidecar is exactly the shape the r6 loaded-sidecar check correctly
classifies as orphan). Maintainer review 4584722701.
Opus SHIP-WITH-FIXES (no code change required): the comment/docstring overstated
that the session-list-change listener covers ALL structural mutations. In-app
mutations fire it, but externally-driven changes (scheduled cron completion,
external CLI writes) don't — for those the 30s streaming TTL is the load-bearing
backstop (≤30s bounded, self-healing lag). Comment-only accuracy fix; logic
unchanged (both gates: perf fix correct, freeze effective, staleness bounded).
/api/sessions re-ran the expensive CLI/cron session projection on every
poll while a turn was streaming — a major cause of the multi-second sidebar
latency + 100% CPU on cron-heavy installs (continuing #4672/#4808/#4889).
Root cause: the CLI/cron projection is gated by _CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE, whose
key folds in _sqlite_file_stat_cache_key -> _sqlite_content_fingerprint
(MAX(rowid) FROM messages). During a live turn the gateway writes a message
row per streamed delta, so that fingerprint advances on essentially every
~5s poll — busting the cache and re-running the full candidate-join +
projection (and the lineage-metadata pass) on every poll, contending for the
same SQLite/global lock the streaming worker holds.
The route-level session-list cache already froze its key during streaming
(#4808 _session_list_cache_streaming_freeze_marker), but that freeze never
reached this inner CLI-sessions cache, so the heavy CLI/cron query still
re-ran whenever the outer cache validated.
Fix: while any stream is active, the CLI-sessions cache key folds in the same
stable streaming-freeze marker (keyed only on the set of active stream ids)
instead of the volatile content fingerprint, and the cache TTL widens to a
streaming window. The projection is reused across polls mid-stream and
rebuilt at most once per window. The instant a stream starts/stops the marker
changes, so freshly-finished rows surface promptly. Structural mutations
(cron completion, new/renamed/archived sessions, attention) now also clear
the CLI cache via the existing session-list-changed listener — those signals
never fire per streamed token, which is what makes the freeze safe.
Idle behavior is byte-identical (freeze only engages with active streams).
Applies to both the active-profile and all-profiles cache paths.
Adds tests/test_issue4842_cli_sessions_streaming_freeze.py (6 tests): marker
idle/stable/changes semantics, the core 'key stable across message writes
while streaming' guarantee, idle key still advances with the fingerprint,
streaming TTL > idle TTL, and the structural-mutation listener clears the
CLI cache.
Opus gate finding (BLOCKING): the two #4385 archive-reappears regression tests
mocked Session.load_metadata_only to return an archived stub WITHOUT writing a
real sidecar file, and never set SESSION_DIR. The new stat-gate in
_state_projection_sidecar_metadata short-circuits on SESSION_DIR/{sid}.json
before consulting metadata, so those mocks were never reached -> archived=False.
This is NOT a production regression (in prod, load_metadata_only reads exactly
SESSION_DIR/{sid}.json and returns None when absent, so archived metadata only
exists when the file does — in which case the stat() succeeds and behavior is
identical). The divergence existed only at the tests' mock boundary.
Fix: both tests now write a real archived sidecar JSON under a monkeypatched
SESSION_DIR, exercising the actual production read path (strictly better
coverage than mocking load_metadata_only). Also documented the
SESSION_DIR-as-sole-source assumption on the cache function per Opus's
forward-looking note.
GET /api/sessions pinned CPU to 100% and took multiple seconds on profiles with
many cron sessions. The state.db -> sidebar projection did three pieces of
redundant per-row file I/O, in BOTH the visible pass and the higher-capped
(CRON_PROJECT_CHIP_LIMIT=200) cron-only second pass:
1. _state_projection_sidecar_metadata(sid): uncached open() + 64KB prefix read +
JSON-key scan, once per row.
2. get_last_workspace(): up to two file reads + an is_dir()/remote probe,
returning the SAME workspace for every row.
3. cron/jobs.json: full read + parse per untitled cron row.
On a cron-heavy install that is hundreds of file reads per build, and because
the enclosing _CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE is keyed on a state.db content fingerprint
that advances on every streamed message row, the whole scan was re-paid on
essentially every 5s poll during a live turn (the recurring 100% CPU / slow
/api/sessions from #4672 -> #4808 -> #4842).
Fix:
- Memoize _state_projection_sidecar_metadata by the sidecar's
(path, mtime_ns, size, ctime_ns) stat signature in a bounded module cache, so
a warm build re-stats instead of re-reads. A rename/archive/edit bumps the
signature and invalidates just that one entry (no staleness). This survives
the 5s CLI-cache busting during streaming, which is the actual trigger.
Mirrors the Claude Code parse cache (#4718). Folded into
clear_cli_sessions_cache() for explicit-reset/test parity.
- Build-scoped memos for cron jobs.json (parse once -> job_id->name map) and
get_last_workspace() (resolve once), matching the existing _cron_pid() pattern.
Output is byte-identical. Adds tests/test_issue4842_cron_projection_perf.py
(7 tests: warm-rebuild no re-read, stat-change invalidation, dict-copy isolation,
missing-sidecar default, jobs.json once, workspace once, lifecycle clear).
Dual-gate (Codex + Opus) findings on the Claude Code transcript parse cache:
1. Cache-key staleness hardening: add st_ctime_ns to the (path, mtime_ns, size,
max_messages) key so a rare same-size, same-mtime in-place edit can't serve a
stale parse. Size is already the strong discriminator for append-only JSONL;
ctime_ns is cheap defense-in-depth (a spurious bump costs one harmless re-parse,
never a stale read).
2. Timestamp-fallback bug-for-bug fix: the row-builder guard used identity
(first_ts is None and last_ts is None) but the field assignment uses truthiness
(first_ts or last_ts or _mtime). They disagreed on a falsy 0.0 timestamp
(epoch-0/1970 transcripts), leaving created_at/updated_at/last_message_at = None
instead of the file mtime the pre-cache inline code fell back to. Guard now uses
the same 'not first_ts and not last_ts' test.
Adds 3 regression tests: epoch-0 mtime fallback, the shared-dict read-only
contract (pins the load-bearing invariant), and same-size+mtime ctime invalidation.
The /api/sessions cold build (which a profile switch triggers) was
dominated by get_claude_code_sessions() re-parsing every Claude Code
JSONL transcript line-by-line on each call — 650-1000ms on a 200-file
/ ~130MB tree, repeated on every switch, every 5s CLI-cache expiry, and
every sidebar poll, because the directory is global but the higher
session cache is keyed per active profile.
Memoize the per-file parse by (path, mtime_ns, size) so a warm build
re-stats files instead of re-parsing them; any genuine edit/append
changes the stat signature and invalidates just that file. Also hoist
the loop-invariant get_last_workspace() out of the Claude Code row loop
(it stats config + probes terminal cwd, ~200 redundant calls per build).
Measured /api/sessions cold-rebuild on a 250-session profile: ~670-880ms
-> ~100-200ms (verified in-browser). Output byte-identical.
Credit @rodboev for the browser-level profiling that isolated the real
bottleneck (the prior pre-warm hypothesis could not move it).

Codex reproduced a SILENT regression: the PR's 4096-BYTE read could miss the
continuation marker the old read_text()[:4096] (4096 CHARS) found. Session.save()
writes compression_anchor_summary (ensure_ascii=False) BEFORE parent_session_id,
so a multi-byte emoji summary puts the marker at char offset ~1230 but byte
offset ~4900 — within the old 4096-char window, past a 4096-byte one → continuation
child no longer detected. Fix: read 16384 bytes (4096 chars worst-case for 4-byte
UTF-8) then slice [:4096] chars, keeping the same needle + bounded I/O. Multibyte
regression test added + proven non-vacuous; updated the read-size assertion to <=16384.

Codex final-gate found the boundary<watermark advanced signal made
sidecar_advanced_past_watermark globally true, so a stale ts>watermark suffix
row appearing in state.db BEFORE the edited checkpoint bypassed the skip and
resurrected. Gate the bypass on state_replay_idx >= len(sidecar_visible_sequence)
(checkpoint consumed); apply the same gate to the same-second CORE-B exception.
Regression test added + proven non-vacuous. All legit cases (state-only reply
after checkpoint, CORE-B same-second) still pass.

Final-gate Codex repro found a non-empty-sidecar drop: when the post-edit USER
turn is checkpointed into the sidecar (ts == advanced watermark) but its
ASSISTANT reply exists only in state.db (ts > watermark), the
sidecar_advanced_past_watermark guard was False (max_sidecar_timestamp ==
watermark, not >), so the 'timestamp > watermark' skip dropped the legitimate
reply. GET /api/session returned ['first','first reply','edited prompt'] and
omitted the assistant.
Fix: treat truncation_boundary < watermark (genuinely advanced) as advanced too,
so post-watermark state-only rows merge through even when the sidecar tail only
EQUALS the watermark. Conservative skip preserved for boundary None / == watermark.
Hoisted the loop-invariant boundary check out of the per-message loop. Regression
test added + proven non-vacuous.

Opus deep-gate found a latent data-loss the Codex harnesses missed: the
empty-sidecar branch kept at_or_after (ts>=watermark) UNCONDITIONALLY, which is
only valid once the watermark was ADVANCED strictly past the original cutoff
(a new turn committed -> boundary < watermark). In the not-advanced states the
content above the watermark is the deleted suffix, so it got resurrected — the
same data-loss class this fix exists to kill. Reachable via crash/cold-load
metadata-vs-sidecar divergence.
- Keep at_or_after ONLY when boundary < watermark (genuinely advanced).
- boundary == watermark (just truncated) OR boundary is None (legacy: a positive
watermark always meant 'frozen at cutoff' pre-#4767) -> conservative ts<=watermark
filter; never resurrects.
- Replaced the backward-scan heuristic with the provable boundary guard.
- Removed the now-dead 'or (not sidecar_messages and watermark>0)' clause in the
non-empty-sidecar path (unreachable; empty sidecar returns earlier).
- Added 2 regression tests (boundary==watermark, legacy None-boundary), both proven
non-vacuous; updated 2 contributor tests that assumed advanced-watermark-without-boundary
(an unreachable state) to pass the boundary the real persistence path always writes.

Codex CORE findings on the fingerprint: (1) default busy timeout could stall
/api/sessions ~10s on a locked state.db; (2) COUNT(*) forced a full messages
table SCAN (~16-22ms/refresh on 200k rows). Fix: open file:...?mode=ro with
timeout=0.05 + PRAGMA busy_timeout=50 (returns fast, falls back to stat stamp on
lock), and use index-only MAX(rowid) per table (no COUNT, no scan). Verified:
EXPLAIN shows SEARCH not SCAN, 0.36ms on 200k msgs, 0.16ms while EXCLUSIVE-locked.
Fingerprint shape is now (sessions_max_rowid, messages_max_rowid); regression
tests updated.
Codex root-cause consult confirmed: the CLI-session cache (_CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE,
5s TTL) and session-list cache were keyed on (st_mtime_ns, st_size) of state.db
+ WAL sidecars. Under WAL-mode writes those stamps collide (same mtime-ns bucket
+ WAL frame size after checkpoint), serving a stale cache -> freshly-committed
gateway/CLI session intermittently absent from /api/sessions (the recurring
test_gateway_sync flake AND a real up-to-5s sidebar delay for gateway writes).
PRAGMA data_version is NOT usable here (fresh per-request connection always
reports its own initial value, never advances — verified). Fix = a cheap
content fingerprint (COUNT/MAX(rowid) over sessions+messages) read on a fresh
connection, which DOES advance on every commit and is immune to mtime
granularity. Wired into _sqlite_file_stat_cache_key (models) + the routes-layer
source stamp. + 3 regression tests + corrected the earlier false root-cause
comments.
A user prompt that exists only in Hermes state.db (no sidecar copy) and falls
chronologically BEFORE a newer sidecar message tail was being appended after the
tail (or skipped) by merge_session_messages_append_only — losing or mis-ordering
it on load. The merge now inserts such a state.db user message at its correct
chronological position via _insert_state_message_chronologically, with a
role-aware tie-break for equal timestamps. Append-only invariant + dedup
(seen_content_keys) preserved.
Deterministic-ordering guard (maintainer add, addresses Codex review): on an
equal-timestamp collision the insert no longer lands at a slot whose left
neighbour shares the message's role — it advances past the same-role
equal-timestamp run, so an already-answered earlier turn can't be re-ordered
into user,user,assistant. (The agent core merges adjacent users before send, so
this was benign in practice, but the guard keeps the merged transcript correctly
ordered regardless.) +1 same-second multi-turn regression test, toothless-checked.

Follow-up to #4385/#4388: that fix stopped stale cron sidecars from being
treated as CLI rows, but get_cli_sessions() still re-projected the same cron
run from Hermes state.db with a hardcoded archived: false after all_sessions()
omitted the hidden sidecar — so an archived run reappeared on refresh.
- New _state_projection_sidecar_metadata(sid) helper returns UI-owned title +
archived flag from the WebUI sidecar (load_metadata_only), degrading
gracefully to {title:None, archived:False} on any miss.
- Both state.db-projection paths (standard CLI + cron fallback) now use it and
carry the archived flag onto the projected row (was hardcoded False), so an
archived cron/tool/API run stays hidden regardless of which path surfaces it.
Title-preference behavior (#1486 rename persistence) is preserved.

* Release PL (v0.51.451): show named-profile external sessions in the all-profiles list (#4067, #4065)
All-profiles session enumeration now scans across profiles only when the
request explicitly asks (all-profiles view); cross-profile import resolves
to the active profile's state.db for unqualified requests (foreign id -> 404),
mirroring the #3982/#3991 detail/export profile-scoping gate.
Co-authored-by: rodboev
* gate fix (Codex CORE + Opus): close cross-profile leak on the import_cli refresh/existing-session branch
The already-imported branch of _handle_session_import_cli forced allow_all_profiles=True
whenever the globally-stored session carried a profile, with no active-profile visibility
gate — so an unqualified request from profile A could read/refresh a session imported under
profile B's live state.db (both advisors reproduced the foreign-transcript leak). Now gated
exactly like the /api/session detail + export endpoints: unqualified requests require
_session_visible_to_active_profile; explicit all_profiles requires a matching profile.
+ 3 regression tests.
* gate fix (Codex SILENT, re-gate): thread source_filter into the all-profiles CLI scan (models.py:4113)
The all-profiles branch keys its cache on source_filter but called
_load_cli_sessions_uncached without it, so /api/sessions?all_profiles=1 with a
source filter returned every-source sessions under a filtered key. + regression test.

* Release v0.51.344 — Release LH (sidebar fork-lineage grouping #3799/#3884)
Absorbs #3884 (@rodboev): manual forks are kept as sidebar lineage boundaries
so a forked session isn't collapsed under a compression-continuation root,
while enriched child-session rows stay independently visible until the later
attachment pass. Also addresses the greptile TOCTOU flag: the background
index-rebuild thread now pins + re-checks its (SESSION_DIR, SESSION_INDEX_FILE)
target under _SESSION_INDEX_REBUILD_LOCK before writing.
Rebased onto fresh master, content byte-identical to PR head, full-suite +
Codex + Opus gated.

* fix(models): propagate target kwargs in index-rebuild fallback (Opus SHOULD-FIX)
Opus advisor stage-344: the _write_session_index fast-path fallback recursed
with _write_session_index(updates=None) and no kwargs, falling back to the
global SESSION_DIR. Safe today (the only kwargs-caller passes updates=None and
never reaches the fast path) but the invariant was implicit. Propagate the
resolved session_dir/session_index_file so a target-scoped rebuild falls back
to that same target.

* fix(session): retire stale truncation watermark on new committed turn (#3831)
retry_last / undo_last / the Edit-truncate handler set truncation_watermark
to suppress the *replaced* tail from the append-only state.db merge.
Session.save() deliberately never auto-clears it (#2914), but nothing retired
it when the user then sent a genuinely NEW turn either — so it froze at the old
edit boundary. A frozen watermark then dropped post-watermark state.db rows
whenever the sidecar was later reconstructed empty (recovery/reconcile),
permanently losing the turns sent after the edit (state.db still had them).
Retire a POSITIVE watermark to None once the new user turn is COMMITTED to
session.messages — at the success-merge (3 sites), eager-checkpoint, error/
recovery materialization, and cold-load repair commit points. Not at chat-start:
in deferred mode the new row isn't in messages yet, so a merge in that window
would resurrect the replaced tail (the max-sidecar guard hasn't risen past the
old boundary). Once committed, max_sidecar_timestamp rises past the replaced
tail and the merge suppresses it without the watermark, so retiring is safe.
Cleared to None, never 0.0 — 0.0 is the truncate-to-empty sentinel (#2914) that
must keep blocking all state replay, so the clear is falsy-gated.
Closes#3831
* chore(changelog): clarify watermark-retirement timing to commit-time
Greptile review noted the original phrase "retires the watermark at the
start of a new user turn" was timing-imprecise. The retirement actually
fires when the new turn is durably committed to session.messages —
at the agent-result merge, the eager user-message checkpoint, or the
cold-load recovery commit. Reword for accuracy; semantics unchanged.

* test(#3831): add regression tests for the two inline watermark-clear paths (greptile P2)
Cover the error/cancel materialization path (_materialize_pending_user_turn_before_error)
and the eager first-turn checkpoint path (_checkpoint_user_message_for_eager_session_save),
which inline the falsy-gated watermark clear instead of calling the tested helper.
The error path is precisely the #3831 failure mode (recovery/reconcile after a
crash), so a dedicated regression test closes that gap. Both assert a positive
watermark clears to None while the 0.0 truncate-to-empty sentinel (#2914) is
preserved.

* fix(ui): stop hidden toast from intercepting clicks on mobile (#3735)
The .toast container kept pointer-events:auto while hidden (opacity:0), so its
fixed padding sat over mobile profile action buttons and ate their clicks. Set
pointer-events:none when hidden; restore auto on .toast.show.

* fix(sessions): rename saves on blur so iOS Safari rename works (#3729)
iOS Safari has no Enter key; the keyboard 'Done' button fires blur, and the old
onblur=cancel discarded the rename. Flip blur to save (Escape still cancels) for
session rename and project create/rename, with a _finishDone guard to prevent a
double-fire between blur and the API callback.

* perf(session): skip fuzzy dedup matching for giant merge payloads (#3730)
Large tool/log payloads made _matching_visible_duplicate() casefold+regex-tokenize
multi-megabyte contents on every visible key, so /api/session took 10s+ and blocked
/api/sessions for ~19s. Keep loose normalization lazy+cached and skip substring/fuzzy
matching for non-exact payloads >200KB; exact visible-key matches still short-circuit.

* fix(settings): persist show_cron_sessions in the explicit Save Settings path too (#3514)
Codex regression-gate follow-up: the autosave path (_preferencesPayloadFromUi)
included show_cron_sessions but the explicit saveSettings() button path read/saved
show_cli_sessions and dropped the cron checkbox — clicking Save Settings silently
omitted it. Read settingsShowCronSessions + add body.show_cron_sessions (gated on
CLI sessions, mirroring autosave).
* fix(settings): gate show_cron_sessions identically in BOTH save paths (#3514)
Codex round-2: my saveSettings() gate exposed that the autosave path
(_preferencesPayloadFromUi) posted the raw cron checkbox state ungated, so
show_cli_sessions=false + show_cron_sessions=true could persist via autosave.
Gate autosave on showCliCb too; update the regression test to assert both
paths gate on settingsShowCliSessions.

* fix(sessions): clear manual_title lock on /api/session/clear (#3542)
Codex regression-gate follow-up: the clear endpoint reset the title to
Untitled directly, stranding manual_title=True so the reused session never
auto-named again. Route the reset through apply_session_title_rename (which
clears the lock for auto-labels) + add a behavioral and a static-guard test.

## Release v0.51.264 — Release IF (stage-r14)
Un-held sibling pair (#3585 + #3586) — both addressed the findings from the earlier hold; re-reviewed fresh.
### Fixed
| Issue/PR | Author | Fix |
|----------|--------|-----|
| #3585 | @rodboev | Cron sessions no longer flood the CLI sidebar window (restored the `("cron","webui")` exclusion in `_load_cli_sessions_uncached`). |
| #3586 | @rodboev | Messaging sessions keep their source label after a refresh **and open + send correctly** — `is_cli_session_row()` classifies them non-CLI, and the sidebar open/import path now uses `_isMessagingSession()` so a reclassified Discord/Telegram/Slack row is imported on open (no transient stub → no `/api/chat/start` 404). |
### Un-hold note
These were held earlier today because the `is_cli_session_row()` reclassification (#3586) created a CORE open-path regression — opening a reclassified messaging session 404'd on the next send. The author pushed a fix adding the `_isMessagingSession()` import gate at all open/lineage/refresh paths (+ regression test `test_issue3603_external_session_import_gate.py`), and Codex confirmed both that AND the secondary webui-recovery concern (cron-only exclusion now keeps `source='webui'` sidecar-less recovery rows) are resolved.
### Gate
- Full pytest suite: **7729 passed, 0 failed**
- ESLint: CLEAN · ruff: CLEAN · browser-smoke: CLEAN
- Codex (regression): **SAFE TO SHIP** — open→import→send path verified (messaging rows go through `/api/session/import_cli` before `/api/chat/start`); `is_cli_session_row` classification correct; the pair composes in `_load_cli_sessions_uncached`.

## Release v0.51.261 — Release IC (stage-r11)
Live Todos panel via an explicit `todo_state` SSE contract.
### Fixed
| Issue/PR | Author | Fix |
|----------|--------|-----|
| #3373 follow-up (#3454) | @v2psv | The Todos side panel now tracks `todo` tool state **live during an active run** instead of staying stale until settle / rolling back on a mid-stream reload. A dedicated `todo_state` SSE event sends a full, redacted, idempotent snapshot on todo-tool completion (no more truncated `tool_complete.preview`); the same `api.todo_state` parser feeds live + cold-load; live snapshots persist into INFLIGHT so reload/reattach restores the panel; cold-load vs INFLIGHT reconciled by timestamp (incl. the `coldTs===0` compressed-session edge); legacy reverse-scan kept as fallback for old servers. |
### Gate
- Full pytest suite: **7692 passed, 0 failed**
- ESLint: CLEAN · ruff: CLEAN · browser-smoke: CLEAN
- Codex (regression): **SAFE TO SHIP** — verified the new `todo_state` SSE handler composes with existing dispatch (no double-subscribe), INFLIGHT persistence is cleared on terminal/cancel (composes with discard_session + turn-journal), timestamp reconciliation can't let a stale local snapshot win, redaction holds, the legacy reverse-scan fallback still works with no double-render, and the `models.py` change is todo-scoped (no CLI-classification interaction).

* fix: reject cross-script drifted auto-generated session titles (#3293)
The title-language mismatch guard only knew two states: German (de) or empty,
and _title_language_mismatch early-returned False whenever the user start
wasn't German. So an English conversation whose LLM-generated title came back
in Chinese / Spanish / Russian sailed through and persisted with
llm_title_generated=true. The German case was the only one covered because
that's the one prior report it was built for.
Generalize from a German-specific binary to a language-agnostic cross-script
check. Add _script_counts() + _dominant_script() (cheap, dependency-free
Unicode-block classification: latin / cjk / cyrillic / arabic / hebrew / greek
/ devanagari). _title_language_mismatch now rejects a title that introduces a
substantial amount (>=35% of alphabetic chars, min 2) of a script different
from the conversation start's dominant script — so short titles that embed a
borrowed Latin technical term still trip, while an English title with a single
foreign place-name does not. The legacy German->English same-script heuristic
is preserved verbatim.
Kept api/streaming.py ASCII-only (the test_title_generation_source_has_no_cjk_
literals guard) — all CJK examples live in the test file, not the source.

* fix: prune orphaned imported-CLI sidecars from the WebUI sidebar (#3238)
When a CLI/agent session is opened in WebUI it gets a WebUI-owned sidecar
(webui/sessions/<id>.json + _index.json row) so it can render and reopen;
all_sessions() then returns it independently of the agent state.db. If the
user later deletes that session from the CLI / local Hermes storage, nothing
pruned the sidecar — the merge loop only overlays CLI metadata when a matching
state.db row exists and otherwise continues, so the stale row lingered in the
sidebar indefinitely (there is no WebUI delete affordance for CLI rows).
Add api.models.agent_session_row_exists(): an exact, uncapped existence probe
against the state.db sessions table. The sidebar merge loop now drops a row
that is_cli_session_row + not WebUI-native + absent from cli_by_id + whose
state.db row is genuinely gone, and calls prune_session_from_index() so
_index.json self-heals.
The state.db probe is deliberate: get_cli_sessions() caps at
CLI_VISIBLE_SESSION_LIMIT (20), so a still-existing session can fall out of
that window and look deleted — pruning on cli_by_id absence alone would delete
live sessions. WebUI-native rows with a CLI ancestor are never pruned, and any
probe error degrades to keep-the-row so a transient failure can't lose data.

* fix: count pin quota by visible session lineage
* docs(changelog): v0.51.222 — backend bugfix batch (#3293 title drift, #3238 sidecar prune, #3288 pin lineage)
* fix(pins): forks count as own pin lineage, not collapsed to parent (#3288 Codex follow-up)
Codex review of the batch found a pin-limit UNDERCOUNT: _session_row_lineage_root_id
followed any parent_session_id to the root, but /api/session/branch creates
independent visible fork sessions that also carry parent_session_id (session_source=
'fork'). Two pinned forks of the same parent collapsed to one quota lineage, letting
a user exceed pinned_sessions_limit with no 400. Fix: a fork returns its own id as
its lineage root (it's a separately-visible session); only compression/continuation
rows still collapse to a shared root. Adds a regression test with two pinned forks +
the parent counting as three distinct lineages, and confirms the existing
pre-compression-snapshot collapse case still passes.
* test(pins): update #2508/#2821 source-match tests for #3288 lineage rename
#3288 replaced the raw-session-id pin counter (pinned_ids set) with a
visible-lineage counter (pinned_lineage_ids via _visible_pinned_lineage_ids over
persisted_rows/candidate_rows). Two pre-existing source-string-matching tests
asserted the OLD implementation literals (pinned_ids = {, _session_field(existing,
session_id...), len(pinned_ids) >=). Updated both to assert the new mechanism while
preserving the invariants they actually guard: snapshot computed BEFORE LOCK (no
all_sessions()-inside-LOCK deadlock), quota filtering via the shared
_session_counts_toward_pin_quota helper, and the limit/400 guard. Behaviour
unchanged; these were implementation-detail assertions, not behaviour tests.

Adds _session_message_dedup_key (full-precision timestamp) so true duplicates
(same role + content + EXACT timestamp) fold, while legitimately-repeated
identical turns with sub-second-distinct timestamps survive — avoiding the
#3268 data-loss class. Wired into both the no-sidecar path and the merge loop's
seen_dedup_keys guard. Closes#3346.
Co-authored-by: thanhtoantnt <thanhtoantnt@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex regression-gate finding: since Session.save() no longer auto-clears the
truncation_watermark, the unconditional 'timestamp > watermark' skip in
merge_session_messages_append_only became a permanent ceiling — a genuine future
state.db-only row (recovery/compaction, missed by the sidecar) would be silently
dropped from /api/session and model-context reconstruction forever. Only apply the
above-watermark skip while the sidecar has NOT advanced past the watermark. Preserves
the #2914 deleted-tail filtering (revert-verified). Adds 2 regression tests.
When state.db has many non-cron sessions, the normal sidebar query caps
at CLI_VISIBLE_SESSION_LIMIT (20) rows ordered by latest activity. Older
cron runs get squeezed out before _include_project_hidden_background_sidebar_sessions
can rescue them, making them invisible under their project chip.
Add a second-pass cron-only query with a higher cap (CRON_PROJECT_CHIP_LIMIT=200)
that merges into the CLI session list. The project-chip rescue layer then
marks them default_hidden so they stay addressable without polluting the
default sidebar window.
Verification: regression test seeds 25+ newer non-cron sessions and asserts
the older messageful cron session still appears with project_id set.
PR #3023 only updated Session.load() and Session.load_metadata_only(), leaving
three sibling validators (Session-internal _repair_stale_pending and the
/api/session/worktree/remove + /api/session/delete route handlers) still
gated on the old lowercase-only character set. That would have shipped a
confusing UX where api-* and reachy-voice-* sessions could be loaded into
the sidebar but rejected with HTTP 400 on delete or worktree removal.
This commit factors the validation into a single is_safe_session_id helper
in api.models and updates all five call sites to use it. Adds regression
coverage in tests/test_issue3023_safe_session_id_validators.py for both
the helper itself and a repo-wide guarantee that no narrow lowercase-only
magic string survives.
Closes the follow-up flagged by the parallel reviewer agent on #3023.
