A threading.Timer per RequestDiagnostics spawns one OS thread per request, held
alive until finish() cancels it. Under sustained /api/sessions poll load this
exhausts the per-process thread cap (RuntimeError: can't start new thread) and
the server stops accepting connections. Replace with a single lazy-init
watchdog daemon thread that scans pending diags every ~1s; public API
unchanged. Caps timeout-tracking at 1 thread/process regardless of request rate.
On the default local in-process backend, an approval card whose stream
ended while still pending (cancel/fork/provider-error/completion) left the
agent queue entry dropped and the _pending mirror reconciled away. Clicking
Approve/Deny then sent an approval_id that matched nothing, so the handler
returned a bare {ok:false}; since #4771 the frontend surfaces that as
'Approval response not accepted.' with a stuck card (reported by
@santastabber on v0.51.666 and b3nw).
Distinguish a genuinely stale card (no pending approval for the session ->
benign {ok:true, stale_cleared:true} so the UI clears the orphan) from a
stale-id click made while a DIFFERENT approval is live (still ok:false so it
can never resolve the wrong command -- #527 guard preserved). Frontend
clears the orphan card on stale_cleared even if the displayed id drifted.

#4771 added an explicit relay-failure 409 (code: gateway_run_unavailable)
to /api/approval/respond so a gateway approval whose run is gone keeps its
card actionable instead of silently failing. But the 409 was emitted
regardless of backend.
On the DEFAULT local in-process backend, every guarded command parks an
entry in tools.approval._gateway_queues (via _await_gateway_decision), and
the local streaming notify callback mirrors it into _pending tagged with
_GATEWAY_MIRROR_FLAG. There is no gateway run and no _STREAM_RUN_IDS entry
by design. _gateway_pending_approval_without_run_id() therefore returned
True for that purely local approval, so the handler 409'd
("active run unavailable") and refused to resolve an approval that resolves
perfectly well locally. Local-backend users hit this on every approval
click (reported by b3nw on Discord; independently filed as #4948 by
claw-io, which also notes the local-runtime trigger).
Fix: gate the 409 on the WebUI actually running the gateway chat backend
(webui_gateway_chat_enabled). Local approvals fall through to the local
resolution path; the legitimate #4771 gateway behaviour is unchanged.
Tests:
- New tests/test_issue4771_local_approval_regression.py drives the real
_handle_approval_respond handler and asserts: local backend -> 200 +
agent thread unblocked; gateway backend -> 409 preserved. These fail
before the fix (409) and pass after.
- The two existing #4771 tests that asserted the 409 are updated to pin
HERMES_WEBUI_CHAT_BACKEND=gateway at respond time, since the 409 is now
gateway-deployment behaviour.

Opus SHIP-WITH-FIXES (no code change required): the comment/docstring overstated
that the session-list-change listener covers ALL structural mutations. In-app
mutations fire it, but externally-driven changes (scheduled cron completion,
external CLI writes) don't — for those the 30s streaming TTL is the load-bearing
backstop (≤30s bounded, self-healing lag). Comment-only accuracy fix; logic
unchanged (both gates: perf fix correct, freeze effective, staleness bounded).
/api/sessions re-ran the expensive CLI/cron session projection on every
poll while a turn was streaming — a major cause of the multi-second sidebar
latency + 100% CPU on cron-heavy installs (continuing #4672/#4808/#4889).
Root cause: the CLI/cron projection is gated by _CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE, whose
key folds in _sqlite_file_stat_cache_key -> _sqlite_content_fingerprint
(MAX(rowid) FROM messages). During a live turn the gateway writes a message
row per streamed delta, so that fingerprint advances on essentially every
~5s poll — busting the cache and re-running the full candidate-join +
projection (and the lineage-metadata pass) on every poll, contending for the
same SQLite/global lock the streaming worker holds.
The route-level session-list cache already froze its key during streaming
(#4808 _session_list_cache_streaming_freeze_marker), but that freeze never
reached this inner CLI-sessions cache, so the heavy CLI/cron query still
re-ran whenever the outer cache validated.
Fix: while any stream is active, the CLI-sessions cache key folds in the same
stable streaming-freeze marker (keyed only on the set of active stream ids)
instead of the volatile content fingerprint, and the cache TTL widens to a
streaming window. The projection is reused across polls mid-stream and
rebuilt at most once per window. The instant a stream starts/stops the marker
changes, so freshly-finished rows surface promptly. Structural mutations
(cron completion, new/renamed/archived sessions, attention) now also clear
the CLI cache via the existing session-list-changed listener — those signals
never fire per streamed token, which is what makes the freeze safe.
Idle behavior is byte-identical (freeze only engages with active streams).
Applies to both the active-profile and all-profiles cache paths.
Adds tests/test_issue4842_cli_sessions_streaming_freeze.py (6 tests): marker
idle/stable/changes semantics, the core 'key stable across message writes
while streaming' guarantee, idle key still advances with the fingerprint,
streaming TTL > idle TTL, and the structural-mutation listener clears the
CLI cache.
Settings -> Extensions offered an Install button even when extensions were
unconfigured, then dead-ended on 'Extensions not configured' because
install_extension required HERMES_WEBUI_EXTENSION_DIR to be set to an existing
directory. Default to a WebUI-managed root under STATE_DIR/extensions and
bootstrap it on first install so install just works with zero config; the env
var remains an optional override (never auto-created). Gallery-installed
extensions already auto-load via the runtime manifest, so the extension loads
on the next app-shell render with no further setup.
- api/extensions.py: _default_extension_root + _writable_extension_root;
_extension_root/_extension_root_status fall back to the managed default;
install_extension bootstraps via _writable_extension_root; dir-unavailable
warning only fires for an explicitly-set-but-broken env path.
- tests: update disabled-by-default expectations (configured=True, valid=False
pre-install) + new regression proving install bootstraps + auto-loads with
no env.
- docs/EXTENSIONS.md: document zero-config one-click install + env now optional.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased].
Tool-call args were truncated to 120 chars at three sites (_truncate_tool_args,
the live _tool_args_snapshot in api/streaming.py, and _toolArgsSnapshot in
static/ui.js). For incidental args that's fine, but content/diff-bearing keys
(command/cmd/script/code/patch/diff/old_string/new_string/content/path/
file_path) feed the rendered tool card AND the diff reconstruction in
recovery-rebuilt sessions, so the cap silently corrupted long commands/paths and
produced broken/empty diffs. Exempt those keys with a much larger cap
(_TOOL_ARG_CONTENT_CAP = _TOOL_RESULT_SNIPPET_MAX = 4000) at every site, keyed by
key name; incidental args keep the 120 cap; storage stays bounded. Part of #4925.
format_wakeup_prompt() in api/background_process.py returned None for any event
type other than 'completion'/watch_*, so async_delegation events (produced when
a background delegate_task subagent finishes) were silently dropped — the
subagent showed as perpetually 'running' and its consolidated result never
re-entered the parent conversation.
Add an async_delegation branch that delegates to the agent-side
tools.process_registry.format_process_notification (which already knows the
async_delegation shape), so the subagent result is rendered into the wakeup
prompt and re-enters chat. Scoped to async_delegation specifically (not all
unknown types) so genuinely-unrecognized events are still skipped — preserving
the existing skip-unknown-event contract.

On Windows a reserved-device-name file (nul/con/prn/aux/com1-9/lpt1-9) can land
in the working tree (e.g. a shell command redirecting to `> nul` under Git Bash,
which treats it as a literal filename). git can't delete it via the normal Win32
path, so `git clean -fd` exits non-zero — and force_apply_update treated that as
fatal, aborting the whole force update with 'Failed to remove untracked files
before force reset' and leaving the user stuck.
The clean is now best-effort: a failure is logged (stderr captured for
diagnostics) but non-fatal, because the subsequent `git reset --hard` overwrites
any tracked-file collisions regardless, and residual untracked files git can't
delete are harmless. Updates the prior test that asserted the (buggy) fatal
behavior to the corrected non-fatal contract, plus a new regression test.

Opus gate finding (BLOCKING): the two #4385 archive-reappears regression tests
mocked Session.load_metadata_only to return an archived stub WITHOUT writing a
real sidecar file, and never set SESSION_DIR. The new stat-gate in
_state_projection_sidecar_metadata short-circuits on SESSION_DIR/{sid}.json
before consulting metadata, so those mocks were never reached -> archived=False.
This is NOT a production regression (in prod, load_metadata_only reads exactly
SESSION_DIR/{sid}.json and returns None when absent, so archived metadata only
exists when the file does — in which case the stat() succeeds and behavior is
identical). The divergence existed only at the tests' mock boundary.
Fix: both tests now write a real archived sidecar JSON under a monkeypatched
SESSION_DIR, exercising the actual production read path (strictly better
coverage than mocking load_metadata_only). Also documented the
SESSION_DIR-as-sole-source assumption on the cache function per Opus's
forward-looking note.
GET /api/sessions pinned CPU to 100% and took multiple seconds on profiles with
many cron sessions. The state.db -> sidebar projection did three pieces of
redundant per-row file I/O, in BOTH the visible pass and the higher-capped
(CRON_PROJECT_CHIP_LIMIT=200) cron-only second pass:
1. _state_projection_sidecar_metadata(sid): uncached open() + 64KB prefix read +
JSON-key scan, once per row.
2. get_last_workspace(): up to two file reads + an is_dir()/remote probe,
returning the SAME workspace for every row.
3. cron/jobs.json: full read + parse per untitled cron row.
On a cron-heavy install that is hundreds of file reads per build, and because
the enclosing _CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE is keyed on a state.db content fingerprint
that advances on every streamed message row, the whole scan was re-paid on
essentially every 5s poll during a live turn (the recurring 100% CPU / slow
/api/sessions from #4672 -> #4808 -> #4842).
Fix:
- Memoize _state_projection_sidecar_metadata by the sidecar's
(path, mtime_ns, size, ctime_ns) stat signature in a bounded module cache, so
a warm build re-stats instead of re-reads. A rename/archive/edit bumps the
signature and invalidates just that one entry (no staleness). This survives
the 5s CLI-cache busting during streaming, which is the actual trigger.
Mirrors the Claude Code parse cache (#4718). Folded into
clear_cli_sessions_cache() for explicit-reset/test parity.
- Build-scoped memos for cron jobs.json (parse once -> job_id->name map) and
get_last_workspace() (resolve once), matching the existing _cron_pid() pattern.
Output is byte-identical. Adds tests/test_issue4842_cron_projection_perf.py
(7 tests: warm-rebuild no re-read, stat-change invalidation, dict-copy isolation,
missing-sidecar default, jobs.json once, workspace once, lifecycle clear).
Dual-gate (Codex + Opus) findings on the Claude Code transcript parse cache:
1. Cache-key staleness hardening: add st_ctime_ns to the (path, mtime_ns, size,
max_messages) key so a rare same-size, same-mtime in-place edit can't serve a
stale parse. Size is already the strong discriminator for append-only JSONL;
ctime_ns is cheap defense-in-depth (a spurious bump costs one harmless re-parse,
never a stale read).
2. Timestamp-fallback bug-for-bug fix: the row-builder guard used identity
(first_ts is None and last_ts is None) but the field assignment uses truthiness
(first_ts or last_ts or _mtime). They disagreed on a falsy 0.0 timestamp
(epoch-0/1970 transcripts), leaving created_at/updated_at/last_message_at = None
instead of the file mtime the pre-cache inline code fell back to. Guard now uses
the same 'not first_ts and not last_ts' test.
Adds 3 regression tests: epoch-0 mtime fallback, the shared-dict read-only
contract (pins the load-bearing invariant), and same-size+mtime ctime invalidation.
The /api/sessions cold build (which a profile switch triggers) was
dominated by get_claude_code_sessions() re-parsing every Claude Code
JSONL transcript line-by-line on each call — 650-1000ms on a 200-file
/ ~130MB tree, repeated on every switch, every 5s CLI-cache expiry, and
every sidebar poll, because the directory is global but the higher
session cache is keyed per active profile.
Memoize the per-file parse by (path, mtime_ns, size) so a warm build
re-stats files instead of re-parsing them; any genuine edit/append
changes the stat signature and invalidates just that file. Also hoist
the loop-invariant get_last_workspace() out of the Claude Code row loop
(it stats config + probes terminal cwd, ~200 redundant calls per build).
Measured /api/sessions cold-rebuild on a 250-session profile: ~670-880ms
-> ~100-200ms (verified in-browser). Output byte-identical.
Credit @rodboev for the browser-level profiling that isolated the real
bottleneck (the prior pre-warm hypothesis could not move it).

Codex reproduced a SILENT regression: the PR's 4096-BYTE read could miss the
continuation marker the old read_text()[:4096] (4096 CHARS) found. Session.save()
writes compression_anchor_summary (ensure_ascii=False) BEFORE parent_session_id,
so a multi-byte emoji summary puts the marker at char offset ~1230 but byte
offset ~4900 — within the old 4096-char window, past a 4096-byte one → continuation
child no longer detected. Fix: read 16384 bytes (4096 chars worst-case for 4-byte
UTF-8) then slice [:4096] chars, keeping the same needle + bounded I/O. Multibyte
regression test added + proven non-vacuous; updated the read-size assertion to <=16384.

Codex round-4 found my followlinks=True change introduced a perf regression: the
probe os.walk lacked the .git/.venv/node_modules/site-packages + skill-support-dir
pruning that iter_skill_index_files applies, so a skill vendoring a dependency
tree made this EVERY-CALL probe walk thousands of irrelevant files — defeating the
cache's whole purpose. The probe now prunes dirnames[:] with the same
EXCLUDED_SKILL_DIRS + SKILL_SUPPORT_DIRS sets as the compute path. Regression test
(change deep inside node_modules/ must not move the probe) added + non-vacuous.
Co-authored-by: Rod Boev <rod.boev@gmail.com>
Codex round-3 reproduced: _skill_tree_max_mtime_ns used os.walk(followlinks=False)
while the compute path iter_skill_index_files uses followlinks=True, so an edit to
a symlinked skill's target SKILL.md was invisible to the probe (stale up to TTL).
Added followlinks=True to the probe walk so it descends symlinked skill dirs and
sees target mtime changes. Regression test added + proven non-vacuous.

Codex re-gate: my prior 'TTL-expired + unchanged-mtime -> refresh TTL, no recompute'
branch could leave counts stale INDEFINITELY for an mtime-PRESERVING out-of-band
change (e.g. a git checkout restoring the old mtime) — worse than master's 8s
recompute. Codex proved it (cached (2,2) stayed (2,2) while a fresh compute returned
(1,2)). Now: within TTL + unchanged mtime serves cached (perf win kept); mtime
changed OR TTL expired both force a full recompute (the TTL is a genuine safety
net). Updated the row-2 test to assert the safety recompute.
Co-authored-by: Rod Boev <rod.boev@gmail.com>
Codex gate found a SILENT regression: the cache returned on a zero-I/O fast path
while inside the 300s TTL, so _skill_tree_max_mtime_ns never ran during the TTL
window and an out-of-band (CLI/git) skill create/edit/delete was invisible for up
to 5 minutes — WORSE than master's ~8s stale window. Restructured so the cheap
stat-only mtime probe runs on EVERY call (prompt change detection); the TTL now
only bounds the expensive SKILL.md recompute. Unchanged mtime still serves cached
+ refreshes TTL with no recompute (the perf win is preserved). Updated 2 tests
that encoded the flawed zero-I/O design + added a within-TTL-change regression
(proven non-vacuous).

Two gate-found CORE/SILENT edges fixed on-branch:
- api/config.py: switching the main default to a different custom:* provider kept
the OLD provider's base_url, routing New Chat to the wrong endpoint. The
base_url-clear on provider-change now covers custom:* too (was exempted).
- static/sessions.js: newSession() skipped the configured default when S.session
was null but the picker held stale state (e.g. after deleting the last session),
inheriting the stale model. Default now wins over legacy picker regardless of
loaded-session state (explicit empty-composer override still takes priority).
- Updated 2 stale source-grep precedence assertions + widened a brittle 6000-char
newSession() slice window to 7000 (assignment block grew; intent unchanged).
- 2 new non-vacuous regression tests (custom base_url clear; precedence).

Codex gate: the apply path now surfaces sanitized non-network fetch stderr, but
_QUERY_SECRET_RE only redacted access_token/token/password/auth/key — leaving
client_secret, private_token, oauth_token, api_key in a remote URL exposed in
the user-facing error. Broadened the pattern to cover those + app_secret/secret
+ api[_-]?key. Regression test added + proven non-vacuous.

Codex final-gate found the boundary<watermark advanced signal made
sidecar_advanced_past_watermark globally true, so a stale ts>watermark suffix
row appearing in state.db BEFORE the edited checkpoint bypassed the skip and
resurrected. Gate the bypass on state_replay_idx >= len(sidecar_visible_sequence)
(checkpoint consumed); apply the same gate to the same-second CORE-B exception.
Regression test added + proven non-vacuous. All legit cases (state-only reply
after checkpoint, CORE-B same-second) still pass.
Co-authored-by: AlexeyDsov <alexeydsov@gmail.com>
Final-gate Codex repro found a non-empty-sidecar drop: when the post-edit USER
turn is checkpointed into the sidecar (ts == advanced watermark) but its
ASSISTANT reply exists only in state.db (ts > watermark), the
sidecar_advanced_past_watermark guard was False (max_sidecar_timestamp ==
watermark, not >), so the 'timestamp > watermark' skip dropped the legitimate
reply. GET /api/session returned ['first','first reply','edited prompt'] and
omitted the assistant.
Fix: treat truncation_boundary < watermark (genuinely advanced) as advanced too,
so post-watermark state-only rows merge through even when the sidecar tail only
EQUALS the watermark. Conservative skip preserved for boundary None / == watermark.
Hoisted the loop-invariant boundary check out of the per-message loop. Regression
test added + proven non-vacuous.
Co-authored-by: AlexeyDsov <alexeydsov@gmail.com>
Opus deep-gate found a latent data-loss the Codex harnesses missed: the
empty-sidecar branch kept at_or_after (ts>=watermark) UNCONDITIONALLY, which is
only valid once the watermark was ADVANCED strictly past the original cutoff
(a new turn committed -> boundary < watermark). In the not-advanced states the
content above the watermark is the deleted suffix, so it got resurrected — the
same data-loss class this fix exists to kill. Reachable via crash/cold-load
metadata-vs-sidecar divergence.
- Keep at_or_after ONLY when boundary < watermark (genuinely advanced).
- boundary == watermark (just truncated) OR boundary is None (legacy: a positive
watermark always meant 'frozen at cutoff' pre-#4767) -> conservative ts<=watermark
filter; never resurrects.
- Replaced the backward-scan heuristic with the provable boundary guard.
- Removed the now-dead 'or (not sidecar_messages and watermark>0)' clause in the
non-empty-sidecar path (unreachable; empty sidecar returns earlier).
- Added 2 regression tests (boundary==watermark, legacy None-boundary), both proven
non-vacuous; updated 2 contributor tests that assumed advanced-watermark-without-boundary
(an unreachable state) to pass the boundary the real persistence path always writes.
Co-authored-by: AlexeyDsov <alexeydsov@gmail.com>
The contributor's empty-sidecar recovery uses the persisted truncation_boundary
to distinguish a legitimate prefix from a deleted suffix, but two production
call sites still passed only truncation_watermark — the default /api/session
full reload (routes.py ~9504) and _merged_session_messages_for_display
(routes.py ~6098) — so a normal full reload fell back to the old 'drop one
turn pair' heuristic and resurrected deleted suffix turns when an OLDER message
was edited leaving >=2 later turns. Thread truncation_boundary through both.

ModuleNotFoundError fires both when cron.jobs is absent AND when an existing
cron/jobs.py fails to import its own dependency. Catch as exc and only return the
graceful {jobs:[],cron_unavailable:true} when exc.name is 'cron'/'cron.jobs';
re-raise otherwise so a real cron bug isn't silently swallowed.
In split-container / minimal Docker deployments the WebUI image may not ship the
agent's cron package on its import path, so the Tasks tab's GET /api/crons did
'from cron.jobs import list_jobs' and 500'd with ModuleNotFoundError — breaking the
whole tab. Now the import is guarded and returns {jobs: [], cron_unavailable: true}
instead, so the Tasks tab loads (empty) instead of erroring. Happy path unchanged.

Maintainer-completed @thanhtantran's #4241 (Nathan approved bringing it in):
- vi locale block in static/i18n.js (contributor's 1615-line translation) rebased onto master.
- Added vi to _LOGIN_LOCALE in api/routes.py (login-page localization, issue #1442 parity).
- Bumped the per-locale hardcoded-count assertions 13->14 across the locale-parity
tests (rtl, quota_chip, hide_suggestions, virtualize_transcript, no_git, help_tab,
verdigris/zeus skins, auxiliary_models) and added 'vi' to the composer-voice-buttons
LOCALES tuples. vi already carries all current English keys (verified 14x per key).
All 497 locale/parity tests pass. Co-authored-by: thanhtantran
The frontend polls /api/sessions every 5s while a turn streams
(static/sessions.js _streamingPollMs=5000), but the cache TTL was 2.5s
(_SESSIONS_CACHE_TTL_SECONDS) — so every streaming poll landed in a fresh window
and forced a full all_sessions() rebuild on the hot path under the global store
LOCK, pinning CPU to 100% and starving token rendering on large stores
(recurrence of #4672). The #4680 freeze-marker only de-dupes rebuilds WITHIN one
TTL window; with polls spaced wider than the TTL it never helped.
Fix: while _session_list_cache_streaming_freeze_marker() indicates an active
stream, use _SESSIONS_CACHE_STREAMING_TTL_SECONDS=10.0 (> the 5s poll) so the
sidebar holds steady across streaming polls. Live runtime state (active stream,
sort order, pending flags) is overlaid on every response regardless of cache, and
structural/settings changes still evict immediately via the source stamp — only a
streaming session's own persisted title/message_count can lag up to 10s, which the
#4672 design already deems acceptable. Idle path byte-for-byte unchanged.
Diagnosis credit: investigation reproduced 6 streaming polls -> 6 rebuilds before,
1 after. Co-authored-by: batkuip <reporter>
Took master's i18n.js as base (it has all 13 locale blocks + had reorganized the
kanban keys, so the stale-branch conflict block would have duplicated them in
zh-Hant), then inserted #2814's 5 kanban_view_* keys into every locale block after
kanban_new_task — real translations for it/ja/zh/zh-Hant/fr (from the PR), English
fallback elsewhere. All 13 locales now have exactly 1 of each key; locale-parity +
kanban tests green (291 passed).
The JSON/YAML tree viewer (#484) hardcoded its default: valid json/yaml
fenced blocks opened in Tree view at 10+ lines (`const showTree=lineCount>=10;`).
Make that default user-configurable while preserving current behavior.
- New settings (persisted via /api/settings -> settings.json):
- structured_code_default_view: auto | on | off (default auto)
- structured_code_auto_tree_lines: int 1..1000 (default 10)
- ui.js: replace the hardcode with a sanitized, unit-testable decision
helper _structuredCodeShowTree(mode, threshold, lineCount); Tree/Raw
toggle, Raw <pre><code>, parse-failure fallback, and YAML lazy-load
are unchanged.
- Appearance settings: 'JSON/YAML code blocks' select + 'Auto threshold
lines' input (disabled outside auto mode); wired through the existing
appearance-autosave and explicit-save paths; live re-render on change.
- boot.js seeds window globals; i18n labels added to all 13 locales.
- Default (auto + 10) reproduces the original >=10 behavior exactly.
The `/`, `/index.html`, and `/session/<id>` routes are the hottest
navigations. Each request re-read the ~190 KB static/index.html from disk
and re-applied two process-constant token substitutions
(__WEBUI_VERSION__, __MAX_UPLOAD_BYTES__), then ran inject_extension_tags()
(which itself reads the extension state + manifest from disk).
WEBUI_VERSION and MAX_UPLOAD_BYTES are fixed for the process lifetime, so
this caches the partially rendered template in an in-process cache keyed by
(size, mtime_ns) -- mirroring the existing _STATIC_CACHE pattern in this
file -- so a redeploy is still picked up without a restart. The per-session
CSRF token and runtime extension tags are still applied per request, so
output is byte-identical to before.
Verified: byte-identical to the old inline render, CSRF still varies per
request, cache invalidates on mtime change, ~5x faster shell render in a
local microbenchmark. Adds tests/test_index_shell_template_cache.py.
Two greptile findings on #4741:
- api/routes.py: removed the redundant 'from api.config import load_settings'
inside _session_list_payload_to_response — load_settings is already imported at
module scope, and this function only runs at request time (after module load).
- api/config.py: _load_yaml_config_file_raw now deep-copies the cached raw dict by
default so a caller can never mutate the shared _yaml_file_cache entry. The
internal _load_yaml_config_file passes _copy=False (it immediately runs
_expand_env_vars, which returns a fresh structure and never mutates its input)
so the /api/reasoning hot path keeps its cheap no-copy fast path; reload_config
uses the safe default copy.
The 'and loaded' guard skipped the _cfg_mtime stamp for a config that parses to
an empty {} dict, so get_config()'s current_mtime != _cfg_mtime stale check fired
on every call and re-entered reload_config() under _cfg_lock forever — a hot-path
spin for a freshly created/reset profile's {} config. Split the guard: the no-op
_cfg_cache.update is still skipped for {}, but _cfg_mtime is always stamped when
the file parsed to a dict, matching master's pre-#4662 behavior. Incidentally
fixes the pre-existing empty/None-config spin. Adds a regression test.
Phase 2 of #4662. reload_config() did a raw yaml.safe_load of config.yaml on
every call (~125ms+ on a large file), including on the profile-switch hot path
(~446ms load_settings stage in /api/sessions diagnostics). It now parses through
the mtime+size-keyed cache added in #4652, via a shared _load_yaml_config_file_raw
core (DRY: _load_yaml_config_file = raw + env-expand). reload_config still runs
its OWN env expansion pinned to the unscoped process-env view (block_process_env_fallback
reset + _thread_ctx.env={}) so the #798 TLS profile-isolation invariant is byte-for-byte
preserved; only the disk parse is now cached. An unchanged config.yaml is no longer
reparsed; an mtime change still busts the cache.
Phase 3 of #4662. _session_list_payload_to_response read settings.json once
per row via _redact_text's per-call load_settings() fallback (the multi-second
response_write stage in /api/sessions diagnostics on large lists). The
_sidebar_session_response_item -> _redact_text(_enabled=...) threading already
existed; this wires the caller to read the api_redact_enabled flag once and
thread it through every row, matching the read-once optimization
redact_session_data() already uses. Behavior-preserving; redaction still
applies (or not) exactly as before.
Codex re-gate 2: post-run flush is bypassed on exception (jumps to outer except) + retry
paths, so a buffered reasoning tail was lost before apperror there. Added a guarded
_flush_reasoning_buffer() at the top of the inner finally (guaranteed exit for
normal/exception/retry) so the tail always reaches the live Thinking view before teardown.
+ regression asserting the finally flush.
Co-authored-by: wlknight <wlknight@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex re-gate caught a SILENT gap: the tail-flush only ran on on_reasoning(text=None),
but the agent never calls reasoning_callback(None) — so the last sub-100ms coalesced
buffer was silently lost, and a reasoning→tool/output transition stranded the tail.
Added a shared _flush_reasoning_buffer() helper called at every boundary that closes or
reorders the live reasoning stream: on_token (visible output starting), on_tool (tool
boundary), the defensive on_reasoning(None), and right after agent.run_conversation()
returns (terminal catch-all for a turn that ends on reasoning with no trailing token/tool).
Each flush emits the buffered chunk then clears it (since-last-flush delta semantics, so
the frontend's reasoningText += text stays correct). + regression test for all sites.

The registry-derived scrub union is best-effort and returns empty when
hermes_cli.auth can't be imported (WebUI-only CI/test env). That made
ANTHROPIC_TOKEN / CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN scrubbing depend on the agent being
installed, so the quota-subprocess regression failed on CI (agent absent) while
passing locally (agent present). Add both token names to the fail-closed floor
set so the scrub covers them regardless of the registry import — strictly more
correct (defense-in-depth) and deterministic across environments.

Opus final gate reproduced two issues in the config-expansion hardening:
MUST-FIX — import-order forward reference. _expand_env_vars (config.py top) calls
_thread_local_env_value, but that fn + _thread_ctx were defined ~6900 lines later,
AFTER the import-time reload_config(). A ${VAR} in a startup config.yaml raised a
(swallowed) NameError, leaving import-time config consumers with empty config.
Fix: relocate _thread_ctx + _thread_local_env_value above the config-file section
(they depend only on os + threading). Verified: startup ${VAR} now expands, no
NameError.
SHOULD-FIX — reload_config baked block-scoped expansion into the process-global
_cfg_cache. If a reload fired while a readonly/worker scope was active (profile
alternation resolves _get_config_path to the named profile), under-expanded
literal ${VAR}s were written to the shared cache, starving concurrent readers of
the `cfg` alias. Fix: reload_config now expands the global cache with the
block flag forced off (process-env view), since the cache is process-global;
per-request scoped reads still go through _thread_local_env_value at their own
sites. Verified: global cache holds the process-expanded value, not the literal.

Final credential-surface item: agent/azure_identity_adapter.py treats
IDENTITY_ENDPOINT / MSI_ENDPOINT as ManagedIdentityCredential sources, so an
empty named profile could inherit the host's managed identity on the quota +
detached-worker paths. Add IDENTITY_ENDPOINT / IDENTITY_HEADER / MSI_ENDPOINT /
MSI_SECRET to the non-registry scrub set (config var AZURE_FOUNDRY_BASE_URL kept).
Detached-worker regression extended.
This completes the agent's enumerable credential-env read surface (verified from
source). Decision (with maintainer): stop the Codex deep-gate here — the
remaining theoretical surface is cloud-SDK-internal credential-source endpoints
on pre-existing infra, not vectors introduced by this PR; validated via Opus +
full suite. The PR's #3961 scope (os.environ mirror race on /api/providers +
/api/models) is fully closed plus the broader same-class hardening.
Co-authored-by: rodboev <rodboev@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex re-gate found a config-template leak vector distinct from the env-name
scrub: _expand_env_vars() expanded ${VAR} references in config values via raw
os.environ, so a profile config.yaml of e.g. `api_key: ${ANTHROPIC_TOKEN}` let
_get_provider_api_key reconstruct the server-process token and pass it through as
the API key argument — even when the child-env scrub stripped the env var. This
bypassed the thread-local channel entirely.
_expand_env_vars now substitutes via _thread_local_env_value (the same
thread-local-first accessor with the block_process_env_fallback guard the PR
introduced): a ${VAR} resolves to the profile's own value, and refuses the
process-env fallback when a profile-scoped readonly/background scope set the block
flag (leaving the reference unexpanded). Cache integrity preserved — only the RAW
unexpanded dict is cached; expansion re-runs per read against the current thread's
scope. Normal (no-scope) behavior unchanged. + regression that fails without the fix.

Round-3 gate found two more credential env vars the agent resolves cross-profile
that the scrub set missed, verified against the installed agent source:
- AWS_CONTAINER_CREDENTIALS_FULL_URI — read by model_switch._has_aws_creds:1360
(botocore container-credentials provider; RELATIVE_URI was present, FULL_URI
was not).
- Azure identity family — AZURE_CLIENT_ID / AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET / AZURE_TENANT_ID
/ AZURE_FEDERATED_TOKEN_FILE (agent/azure_identity_adapter.py service-principal
+ workload-identity model auth) and AZURE_FOUNDRY_API_KEY
(runtime_provider.py).
Enumerated the agent's full credential-env read surface from source to close the
whole class in one pass rather than one var per gate round. Deliberately EXCLUDES
config/region vars (AWS_REGION, AWS_DEFAULT_REGION, AZURE_FOUNDRY_BASE_URL) — the
child probe may legitimately need those. Regressions extended to pin FULL_URI +
the Azure family.
Co-authored-by: rodboev <rodboev@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex re-gate found the registry-derived scrub still missed credential env vars
the agent resolves via raw os.getenv() that aren't in PROVIDER_REGISTRY:
CUSTOM_API_KEY (hermes_cli/models.py), AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK
(hermes_cli/model_switch.py), AZURE_ANTHROPIC_KEY (runtime_provider.py), and the
boto3 AWS_* credential family (agent/bedrock_adapter.py). Same cross-profile leak
class on custom/AWS-backed provider quota + detached-worker paths.
- Add _NON_REGISTRY_AGENT_CREDENTIAL_ENV_NAMES fail-closed set, union into
_profile_secret_env_names so BOTH leak sites pick it up.
- _account_usage_subprocess_env now relies on the centralized scrub set (WebUI-
only fallback only if the api.profiles import fails), dropping the partial
local AWS pair.
- 2 more regressions (quota subprocess + detached worker) covering CUSTOM_API_KEY
+ AWS family, fail without the fix.
Co-authored-by: rodboev <rodboev@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex re-gate of #4544 reproduced a residual cross-profile leak: the PR closed
OPENROUTER_API_KEY but ANTHROPIC_TOKEN / CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN still leaked the
server-process credential to an empty named profile on /api/provider/quota
(anthropic) and the detached-worker model-rebuild path, because the scrub set was
built only from the WebUI _PROVIDER_ENV_VAR map (which omits OAuth/token-flow
provider env vars).
Widen the shared _profile_secret_env_names() scrub source to union in the agent
registry's api_key_env_vars (hermes_cli.auth.PROVIDER_REGISTRY) so every
credential env var the agent runtime can resolve via raw os.getenv() is scrubbed
in profile-scoped reads. Fixes both leak sites at once (both route through
_profile_secret_env_names). + 2 regressions that fail without the fix.

Two-layer perf fix for the /api/reasoning storm dropping streaming to ~2 tok/s:
- ui.js: syncReasoningChip() serves the cached chip on routine topbar syncs, only
re-fetching when the model/provider key (_lastReasoningFetchKey) changes — restores
pre-a9ce2889 behavior while keeping its model-switch-refresh intent.
- config.py: memoize _load_yaml_config_file keyed on (path, st_mtime_ns, st_size) under
a lock; cache the RAW parsed dict and re-run cheap _expand_env_vars per call (cache stays
correct vs os.environ and read-modify-save callers get a fresh structure; on-disk edits

as read-only health cards w/ a browser-side credentials-omitted health probe. Backend

output from parsed components (no echo of rejected input); frontend esc()'s every field,
whitelists badge status, fetch never reads body. Purely additive to GET /api/extensions/status.

* fix#4612 Codex gate findings: reject encoded query/fragment in health_path + align CSP loopback allowlist
Codex SHIP-WITH-FIXES (2 reproduced SILENT findings):
1. _normalize_sidecar_health_path percent-decoded AFTER the raw query/fragment ban,
so /health%3Ftoken=abc -> ?token=abc survived into the probed URL. Now re-rejects
decoded ? and # + regression test (%3F/%23 skipped with sidecar_health_path_rejected).
2. The origin validator accepts https:// and [::1], but CSP connect-src only listed
http 127.0.0.1/localhost -> accepted https/IPv6 loopback sidecars would be CSP-blocked.
Aligned _CSP_CONNECT_BASE (added https v4/localhost + http(s) [::1]) + updated the 4
exact-string CSP tests + a regression test asserting all loopback forms are allowed.

* Release v0.51.564 — Release TW (loopback sidecar diagnostics; #4612)
* fix(#4612): drop browser-invalid [::1]:* CSP source (browser-smoke fail)
The CSP-loopback-alignment fix added http(s)://[::1]:* to connect-src, but CSP
host-source grammar can't express a port wildcard on a bracketed IPv6 literal —
Chromium rejects '[::1]:*' as an invalid source, which browser-smoke flags as a
console error (CI fail). Keep the valid https://127.0.0.1:*/localhost:* additions;
drop the IPv6 wildcard entries. IPv6 [::1] sidecars are still accepted by the
validator (displayed in the card); their browser health probe surfaces as
'blocked' under CSP unless an operator adds a specific-port [::1]:<port> via
HERMES_WEBUI_CSP_CONNECT_EXTRA. Tests updated to match + assert [::1]:* absent.

* stage #4618 (allenliang2022): broaden streaming stale-compressor guard to any model-window mismatch + #4618 regression tests + CHANGELOG
Broadens #3256's default-only live-usage guard: the streaming SSE snapshot now
always resolves the real per-model window via the same helper GET /api/session
hydration uses (_context_length_lookup_inputs_for_model + get_model_context_length)
and corrects whenever it differs from the compressor's cached value, with a
TypeError fallback to the legacy 2-arg form. Fixes 'refresh shows 1M, send reverts
to stale 168k + early auto-compress' on model-switched sessions. Per-stream cache
preserved (one lookup/stream). Code byte-identical to PR head 3beb18e92d73.
Adds 4 source-structure regression tests (RED-proven on master).

* fix#4618 gate findings: profile-scoped config (Codex cross-profile) + #4248 256k acceptance gate (Opus downward-clobber)
Codex SHIP-WITH-FIXES: live-snapshot used ambient get_config() which in the
detached streaming worker resolves the process-global/default profile (#3294) ->
for a non-default profile pinning a different per-model context_length it would
surface the WRONG profile's window. Now resolves via get_config_for_profile_home
on the session's own profile home (mirrors the worker's _cfg resolution).
Opus SHIP-WITH-FIXES: broadened guard aligned resolution w/ hydration but not its
#4248 acceptance gate -> a transient low-confidence 256k metadata probe could
clobber a LARGER cached window mid-stream. Now reuses the exact hydration helper
_should_accept_session_context_length_refresh on both modern + legacy paths.
+ regression tests for both. Co-authored-by: allenliang2022 <allenliang2022@users.noreply.github.com>
* fix#4618 Codex re-gate findings: broaden save + SSE-done stale-compressor guards too
Codex re-gate found the broadened live-snapshot guard fixed metering but the two
SIBLING paths still used the old default-only exact-cap test:
- api/streaming.py final session-save: persisted stale other-model window (168k)
to s.context_length -> wrong window on reload.
- api/streaming.py terminal SSE: emitted stale window -> indicator REVERTS
on stream end (messages.js overwrites S.lastUsage) = the exact 'send reverts to
168k' symptom.
Both now resolve the real per-model window via the same hydration helper and honor
the #4248 acceptance gate (no 256k downward-clobber), with legacy 2-arg fallback.
This is the root-cause completion across all 3 paths (live/save/SSE-done).
+ 2 regression tests. Co-authored-by: allenliang2022 <allenliang2022@users.noreply.github.com>

Codex+Opus gate (info-leak): the display-only escape-target rows still returned the resolved
outside path (target), target-derived is_dir, and target stat size; ui.js showed the outside path
in the open-dialog. Fix: emit ONLY name/path/type/target_outside_workspace/mtime for outside rows
(no target, no size, is_dir=False); dialog uses a generic 'points outside workspace' message (dropped
{target} from external_link_open_confirm across all 13 locales). Containment was already intact (both
gates confirmed); this closes the path-disclosure. Tests updated to assert the no-leak property.
claw-io: symlinks whose target resolves outside the workspace root were silently dropped; now emitted
with target_outside_workspace=True (display-only — safe_resolve_ws/open_anchored_fd still block
navigation). Dedup-winner over #4573 (stronger tests). Co-authored-by: claw-io <claw-io@users.noreply.github.com>

Gate findings (Codex 2-CORE / Opus SHIP-WITH-FIXES), both fixed:
1. cross-profile leak — _pre_compression_continuation_session_id scanned all profiles' sessions,
matched only by parent_session_id; now filters children by _profiles_match(child, snapshot)
+ validates returned sid with is_safe_session_id. +cross-profile regression test.
2. restore-state poison — frontend wrote continuationSid to localStorage/URL BEFORE the inner
loadSession proved it loadable; removed the speculative write (success path at the loaded id
handles it). Updated the source-grep test to assert the safe form.
Bounded BFS (range(20)+seen) + recursion guard confirmed safe by both gates.
george-andra: GET /api/session surfaces continuation_session_id for a hidden pre-compression
snapshot; loadSession follows it so a mobile reload mid-compression recovers to the visible
continuation instead of a hidden snapshot (chat looked 'lost'). Resolved 2 conflicts (1615 behind):
sessions.js merged w/ #2971 re-arm guard; routes.py merged w/ _session_source_is_webui branch.

Codex gate (SILENT): the scene-builder/hydrator _anchor_scene_row_looks_like_final_answer
(messages.js + routes.py) used a loose '>=80 + prefix' rule while the renderer
_anchorSceneProseMatchesFinalAnswer uses '>=80 + ratio>=0.9'. A short intermediate-prose row that
was a prefix of the final answer could be dropped from the persisted scene by the looser builder,
leaving the stricter renderer no row to show -> silent prose loss. Aligned both filters to the
renderer's rule (drop fewer -> preserve more intermediate prose). Matrix already GREEN; this closes
the edge the fixture didn't exercise.
Codex re-gate (CORE, reproduced): _reload_dotenv() was guarded, but get_profile_runtime_env() also
copies a profile .env into runtime env, which profile_env_for_background_worker()/streaming apply to
os.environ -> HERMES_WEBUI_ISOLATED_PROFILE=0 in a profile .env still escaped isolation on that path.
Fix: filter _PROTECTED_ENV_KEYS in get_profile_runtime_env's .env loop + add the key to
_BLOCKED_RUNTIME_ENV_KEYS (gateway-parity filter). + runtime-path regression test.
Codex gate (CORE, reproduced): _reload_dotenv() copies a profile's .env into os.environ, so a
contained user could set HERMES_WEBUI_ISOLATED_PROFILE=0 in their own profile .env and silently
escape isolation. Fix: _PROTECTED_ENV_KEYS — _reload_dotenv refuses to override operator/deployment
keys from a profile .env (logs a warning). + regression test proving .env can't disable isolation.
Profile-isolation regression: isolated mode was inferred from HERMES_HOME path shape (*/profiles/<name>),
which the launcher exports for ANY normal named profile -> single-users on a named profile lost profile
switching + saw only 1 profile. Fix: HERMES_WEBUI_ISOLATED_PROFILE explicit opt-in is now the PRIMARY gate.

<alias>` slash-command resolution (static/commands.js resolves slash aliases
only from /api/models.aliases). Add _model_aliases_from_config() helper and
reconstruct aliases from current config in BOTH loaders (fixes the pre-existing
strict-loader gap too). Adds a regression test.

Applies Opus ship-gate findings: (1) the autouse fixture now points
_get_models_cache_path at an isolated temp file so the over-budget static-fallback
test can't read a real ~/.../models_cache.json and become an order-dependent flake;
(2) _load_stale_models_cache_from_disk rejects a cross-schema cache (its groups/badge
shape may be incompatible with the current picker). Adds a cross-schema-rejection test.

- Remove the redundant 4th OR clause from _catalog_has_provider() — the
existing C1–C3 already handle compound provider IDs correctly (C2 IS
a normalized-vs-raw comparison; the 4th clause was a strict subset).
- Add && _activeProvider guard to _isCrossProviderPick in messages.js
to prevent spurious True when the profile has no configured default
provider (reviewer's optional hardening suggestion).
- Add test_catalog_has_provider_compound_ids.py verifying that compound
provider IDs like 'custom:glm-free-relay' are correctly recognized by
the existing C1–C3 clauses.
Two-part fix for the model selector jumping back to the profile default
after the first message when a cross-provider model (e.g. a custom relay
like custom:glm-free-relay) is selected.
Backend (api/routes.py):
- _catalog_has_provider() now matches compound provider IDs (e.g.
custom:zenmux-relay) whose normalized form (custom) is a raw
catalog provider_id. Previously the three existing checks missed
normalized-vs-raw comparison for compound hints, causing the catalog
lookup to fail and the fallback branch to silently revert the model
to the profile default on every non-explicit turn.
Frontend (static/messages.js):
- The explicit_model_pick marker was consumed after the first send(),
so subsequent sends lost the signal and the server repaired the
model back to the profile default (#3737 regression).
- Now, when the session has a non-default model from a different
provider than the profile's active provider, every send() sends
explicit_model_pick=true so the server honors the user's choice
across the entire conversation.
- The pending onchange marker is still consumed after the first send
(unchanged behavior); only the explicit_pick inference is broadened.
The legacy /v1/chat/completions approval handler (added for #4549) rendered
the approval card but never populated _STREAM_RUN_IDS, so /api/approval/respond
could not relay the user's choice back to the gateway to resume the parked run
— it fell through to the local approval path and returned {ok: false}. Record
the run_id from the approval payload (no-op when absent), mirroring the runs-API
path. Adds a behavioral regression test that fails on the pre-fix head.
Codex ship-gate finding (CORE). Co-authored-by: rodboev <rodboev@users.noreply.github.com>
Codex SILENT finding: the new 'if not target.exists(): return {}' guard ran
BEFORE the ambient-resolver short-circuit, so a matching ambient profile home
whose directory does not physically exist (fresh install / monkeypatched cfg)
returned {} instead of deferring to get_config() — breaking in-memory overrides
and changing the default-profile missing-home path. Move the guard below the
ambient short-circuit; add a regression test (matching-but-nonexistent ambient
home still defers to get_config()).
The /api/profiles handler re-imported _is_isolated_profile_mode locally inside
handle_get, which made the name function-local for the ENTIRE handle_get scope
-> the earlier use at the /api/projects branch (routes.py:8000) hit
UnboundLocalError (F823), failing 6 test shards + lint. It's already a
module-level re-export (routes.py:429), so the local re-import is redundant;
removing it lets every in-function use resolve to the module global. Also drop
an unused 'from pathlib import Path' in the new #4449 state-dir test.

Gate-found (Codex CORE, repro'd): a hardlink at a clean *.md page name can
carry an arbitrary inode (incl. one outside the wiki) through the O_NOFOLLOW +
inode-identity read check — O_NOFOLLOW does not block hardlinks. Reject any
page file with st_nlink > 1 in BOTH the allowlist walk and the read-path
revalidation. Pre-existing on master (the inode recapture predates this PR's
cache); closing it here while on the read path. +1 toothed regression test
(prime cache -> hardlink listed page to outside secret -> assert 404, no leak).
